I am posting several responses out of many I have received after my book presentations. Thanks to everyone. God bless you all.
Ms. Smolik provided a great perspective on small-town families of WWII in Europe both during and after the war. We hear so much of the truly egregious events of that war. Margaret’s presentation is a great account and reminder of the resiliency of those who quietly but significantly contributed to our great American heritage.

Like a Haystack is an enlightening narrative of one family’s brave determination in the struggle to survive adversity during and after WW ll. It makes us realize some of the many things we Americans take for granted, as well as making us realize our obligation to practice social inclusion of others.

Margaret Smolik’s compelling narrative of her childhood as a refugee puts a personal face to the chaotic history of Europe during the 30’s and 40’s that for most of us is just a chapter in a history book. Her story makes the events of Europe before and during WWII come alive, and shows us how the big moments in history have lasting effects on people’s personal lives.

Margaret, we were so glad we were able to hear your talk at our church. We can’t imagine what you and your parents, grandparents, and siblings went through. We all should feel so fortunate for what we have. You do a beautiful job in delivering your message. We thank you for letting us share your struggles.

Thank you for providing a fantastic program for our community!
